UKPHS Lindsey Simpson – Communication Is Key

Being a business leader means having a lot of responsibilities and the wellbeing of your employees is one of the most important.

This week on the Workplace Health and Wellbeing podcast, Sheila is joined by Lindsey Simpson from Spark Team communications. Lindsey is a Communications and Engagement specialist working on improving culture & approaches to workplace mental health. She is also the lead researcher on the Workforce State of Mind Survey.

Lindsey is here to talk about communication and the importance of communication in terms of an organization's performance engagement and well-being.

In this episode, we look at what good communication is, the key elements of good communication, the overall well-being of the employees, and more.

Good mental health in the workplace is vital for any successful organization. Communication is key.  There is no point having the best wellbeing support package if no one knows what it is, what it covers and how to access the services and support provided.

Lindsey began her career in the health and fitness industry, and then moved into organisational development, culture, and strategy. She then joined the team creating the Workforce State of Mind survey and continued educating and shifting people toward understanding the importance of mental health in the workplace.

Understanding what matters to your workforce and acting on this is essential. According to Lindsey, the role of communicators in developing the process, being subject matter experts, and language are the three key elements of communication in the workplace.

Language is an important part of the communication process. It's a simple rule that both the sender and the receiver must speak the same language otherwise, the message gets lost. Keeping the conversation simple and specific is key.

In conclusion, Lindsey offers one last piece of advice for business leaders to build a healthy workplace: “educate yourself and understand where your employees are”.
